Water buffalo were introduced to Argentina in the 1940s and quickly adapted to the grassland ecosystems of the La Pampa region, as well as the extensive wetlands and forests of Corrientes in the northeast. With their massive size and appetite, they settle in areas that suit them, making La Pampa’s expansive grasslands and wetlands an ideal habitat.

If you are exploring destinations to hunt water buffalo, often referred to as “black death,” Argentina should be one of your top choices, as there is no shortage of this challenging game.

AWS Lodge Hunting Expectations: Water Buffalo

When people think of hunting in Argentina, the first animals that usually come to mind are the red stag, blackbuck, fallow, and axis deer. However, the largest animal in Argentina, both in physical size and population, that deserves attention is the water buffalo. Argentina is one of the world’s top destinations for water buffalo hunting, and with the abundance of this species, success rates are nearly 100%.

In Argentina, there are three species of water buffalo: Murrah, Jafarabadi, and Mediterranean, with the latter being the most common. The horn structure of Argentine buffalo differs from that of the Australian and Cape buffalo, as they are shorter and curve upward. While not as wide or flat as their relatives, they can be up to a third larger in body size and equally formidable.
